How to Watch MTV for Free? How to Download MTV Videos?
What is MTV?
The name "MTV" is an initialism for "Music Television," the first American cable music channel that debuted on August 1, 1981. The MTV Entertainment Group, a division of Paramount Media Networks, which in turn is a division of Paramount Global, owns and operates the channel. The headquarters of the MTV Entertainment Group can be found in the Big Apple.
In its early days, the channel was directed by a type of TV personality known as a "video jockey," who played music videos and other content linked to music. The network has steadily moved its focus away from music in the years since its inception, in favor of original reality programming aimed towards teens and young adults.
Since the start of the year 2020, Ridiculousness has taken up the lion's share of MTV's airtime. This show was featured "for 113 hours out of the network's full 168-hour roster" in June of that year.
Several other television networks, both in the United States and abroad, have emerged from MTV's influence and eventually went on to become independent. As of the start of 2017, over 90.6% of American households had access to MTV.
Which MTV shows are available?
During a press conference in February 2010, MTV announced that it would no longer refer to itself as "Music Television." The network would still air video premieres sometimes, but now it would do it both on television and online, in real time, where users could interact with their favorite bands and movie stars. Over the rest of the decade, the network would air less and less music shows.
New MTV president Sean Atkins announced in April 2016 that the network would be bringing back its music programming. New episodes of Unplugged and a new weekly performance series titled Wonderland will premiere on MTV on April 21, 2016.
On the day of Prince's death, the network briefly interrupted its usual programming to air a number of the late musician's music videos. Following a July 2017 announcement, TRL was set to make its network return on October 2, 2017.
In the 2010s, many viewers noticed that film broadcasts and marathons of chosen original programming (like Ridiculousness) took up the majority of MTV's day-to-day schedule. It was also noticed that film broadcasts and regular marathons of select original programs made up a large portion of MTV's daily schedule.
In addition to its current lineup of reality programming, MTV wants to create more written content. Among the shows that fit this description were Awkward, a revamped version of Teen Wolf, and an American version of Skins.
In June of 2012, the network revealed that they were developing a TV series based on the Scream film series. Many of these shows were moved to other networks as the decade came to a close and MTV returned to its roots in generating unscripted entertainment. As of 2016, Chris McCarthy has been serving as MTV's president.
McCarthy will take over as president and CEO of the MTV Entertainment Group in 2021. (which also oversees Comedy Central, MTV, TV Land, CMT, and Smithsonian Channel)
